First Year in Review

After attending a FireSAFEMarin presentation in Sep 2017, a small group of Cascade Canyon neighbors came together in the Fall of 2017 to reduce our neighborhood’s wildfire hazards and improve our fire safety awareness. We became an official Firewise® USA site in March 2018.

And since the Fall of 2017 we’ve been busy:

-       Education workshop at the Women’s Club in Nov 2017

-       Started a Cascade Canyon Firewise newsletter

-       Conducted 5 Cascade Canyon road walks with neighbors to discuss vegetation management

-       Conducted 1 property review (vegetation management and home hardening) with homeowners

-       Participated in a broom pull in the Elliot Nature Preserve

-       Outreach efforts - Participated in the Fairfax Festival Parade; had a pop up tent at Doc Edgar Park and walked door to door in the Cascades prior to our Cascade Canyon Chipper Days. 

-       Chipper Days – obtained a 2nd Chipper Day from the Town and brush pick up in the Cascades in recognition of our efforts to become a Firewise® USA recognized community. 

Due to our Cascade Canyon neighborhood efforts we collected over 17 tons of vegetation within our neighborhood (our total was more than the town’s entire 2017 Chipper Day program tonnage).   

Plans for 2019

This year, in addition to doing more of the above efforts, we will be renewing our annual Cascade Canyon Firewise® USA status. One of the renewal requirements is that our Cascade Canyon Firewise® neighborhood invest volunteer hours or dollars in reducing wildfire risk in our neighborhood - at the rate of one volunteer hour (valued at $24.14) per household for a total of $12,070. We easily met this for our initial Firewise® application. 

So please keep track of the hours and/or dollars you spend in 2019 on vegetation management on your property and home hardening upgrades to make your home more resistant to wildfires (ex: resistant vents, gutter guards, sealing cracks to prevent ember intrusion, etc.).  We will be asking for that information periodically to support our renewal.
